HUBZone opportunity
HUBZone areas in Virginia include parts of Southwest Virginia (coal country), portions of the Shenandoah Valley, and select rural counties. Northern Virginia — where most federal contracting occurs — has very limited HUBZone coverage. Check the SBA HUBZone map at sba.gov before targeting this certification in Virginia.
Strategy for buyers
Virginia hosts the largest concentration of federal government contractors in the United States — Northern Virginia (Tysons, Reston, McLean, Arlington) is effectively the capital of the federal IT and intelligence market. An acquired IT services or professional services firm in Northern Virginia with active security clearances, existing task order vehicle positions, and intelligence community relationships is among the most valuable acquisition targets in any industry segment. The SBA loan to acquire such a firm is typically justified by the multi-year contract backlog and recurring task order revenue.
