TL;DR — Key Facts

  • →AI shopping agents (**agentic commerce**) are live in the US: ChatGPT Instant Checkout (Sept 2025), checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini via UCP (Jan 2026), and Meta Muse (Sept 2026).
  • →The first merchants affected are those selling products through platforms like Etsy and Shopify, which were named as early participants.
  • →Most local service businesses aren’t being booked by agents yet. For them, being recommended by AI matters more right now.
  • →The agent usually asks the customer to approve the payment, so the merchant still gets a normal order.
  • →This quarter: learn your platform’s agent-checkout settings, keep product data accurate, and check your AI visibility.

What an AI shopping agent is

An AI shopping agent buys for a customer. It finds the product, fills in the checkout and pays, usually after the customer approves. This is what people mean by agentic commerce.

Three US examples are live as of September 2026:

  • ChatGPT Instant Checkout: US users buying from US Etsy sellers since September 29, 2025, with Shopify merchants announced; built on the open Agentic Commerce Protocol with Stripe.
  • Google AI Mode and Gemini: checkout from participating retailers via the Universal Commerce Protocol, announced January 11, 2026 and co-developed with Shopify.
  • Meta Muse: a personal agent announced September 8, 2026 that can buy using Link by Stripe, with the user’s final approval.

If you are buying a business, this table is a quick way to gauge how much its sales could shift into AI channels.

What changes for the merchant

  • The customer may never visit your site. The order arrives through the agent. Your product data (titles, prices, stock, shipping, returns) is what the agent reads, so accuracy matters more.
  • The platform handles the protocol. Small merchants on Shopify or Etsy generally don’t integrate ACP or UCP themselves.
  • Payments still need approval. The live products ask the customer to approve the purchase, and the card-network programs from Visa and Mastercard add spending controls for agents.
  • Some things are unclear. How returns, disputes and fees work can differ by program and change quickly. Read your platform’s terms before opting in.

What to do this quarter

  1. Find your platform’s agent-checkout settings and read the terms (fees, returns, which products are eligible).
  2. Clean up product data: accurate titles, prices, availability and policies in plain text.
  3. Check your AI visibility with our checklist. An agent can only buy from a shop that it finds and chooses.
  4. Watch the numbers: tag orders that arrive through AI channels if your platform reports them, so you can see whether this matters for you.

If you’re a local service business, do step 3 now and revisit the rest when agents start booking in your category.
