What Is AI Visibility? How to Check if AI Recommends Your Business
TL;DR — Key Facts
- →**AI visibility** is whether AI assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, Claude) name, recommend or cite your business when people ask about your category.
- →Assistants with web search pick from pages they retrieve at answer time, so a business mostly becomes visible by being on the pages they retrieve and trust.
- →Google says there are no special requirements for its AI features: no special markup or AI text files, and standard SEO fundamentals still apply.
- →You can measure it: Bing Webmaster Tools reports AI citations and "grounding queries" (public preview since February 2026), and you can test assistants directly.
- →Answers vary between runs, so measure "recommended in X of N tries," never a single answer.
What AI visibility means
When someone asks an AI assistant "who are the best SBA lenders for a first-time buyer?" or "is there a good bakery franchise under $300K?", the answer names a handful of companies and often links sources. AI visibility is how often your business is one of those names or sources.
It is not the same as agentic commerce, where an AI agent actually buys something (see what agentic commerce is). AI visibility is about being recommended. It matters for every business today, whether or not any agent ever buys from you.
Two things count:
- Mentions: the assistant names your business in its answer.
- Citations: the assistant links one of your pages as a source. A citation can send a click, but often the reader gets the answer without visiting.
How assistants pick which businesses to recommend
Assistants that search the web (Copilot, ChatGPT with search, Gemini, Perplexity) work roughly the same way: the model turns the question into one or more searches, reads the pages that come back, and writes an answer from them. Bing calls those behind-the-scenes searches grounding queries and reports them to site owners.
That means a business mostly becomes visible in two ways:
- Your own pages are retrieved and cited, for example your service page, pricing page or FAQ.
- Other pages that are retrieved mention you, such as reviews, comparisons, directories and news. A page ranking "the best X in Y" that includes you can put you in the answer even if your site is never cited.
What assistants don’t publish is an exact ranking formula. Google’s guidance for its AI features says there are no extra requirements to appear: no special schema, no AI-specific text files, and the same SEO fundamentals apply. Be skeptical of anyone selling a secret "AI ranking factor."
What we have seen on our own site
FundBizPro is a small site. Bing Site Explorer reported zero backlinks for all 17 URLs it sampled. Even so, in about 85 days to July 19, 2026, Bing recorded roughly 9,900 citations of our pages in AI answers. A second view shows 2,991 across 128 tracked grounding queries, and the number of cited pages grew from 22 in May to 42 in July.
The most-cited questions were specific comparisons and reviews: "Fora Financial equipment financing review," "Tim Hortons franchise," "most affordable B2B franchises 2026." Bing’s report doesn’t say which page was cited for each question, but our guides on those topics share a structure: a summary of key facts, clear section headings, comparison tables and an FAQ.
It’s one site, so we can’t prove cause from it. It is what you’d expect from how retrieval works, though. An assistant searching for a specific answer has good reason to cite a page that gives that answer directly. Full data: AI citations case study.
How to check your own AI visibility
You can check it for free in under an hour:
- Write 5 questions a customer would ask in their own words, including your city or category: "best family dentist in Plano," "who does commercial HVAC repair near me," "is [your brand] legit?"
- Ask each question in ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity, three times each, in a fresh chat with web search on.
- Record who is named, in order, and which sources are linked.
- Count "recommended in X of N runs" for you and each competitor. One answer is not a result: answers vary between runs.
- Check Bing Webmaster Tools → AI Performance if you have a website. It shows how often Copilot and Bing AI answers cited your pages and which grounding queries triggered them. Google also announced generative-AI performance reports in Search Console in June 2026.
Repeat monthly, with the same questions, so the changes you see are real.
How to improve it
Most of this is ordinary website and listings work:
- Answer the questions people actually ask, one clear page per topic, with the answer near the top. Our guides open with a short fact summary for this reason.
- Put the specifics in text: prices or price ranges, service areas, hours, requirements. Numbers inside images or PDFs are harder to cite.
- Keep your listings consistent: your Google Business Profile, Bing Places and the directories in your industry. Assistants often cite these pages.
- Earn mentions on pages that get cited, such as local "best of" lists, industry directories and review sites. Being included on a page an assistant already trusts can matter as much as your own site.
- Fix technical basics: the main text is in the page’s HTML, pages are indexable, and they aren’t blocked in robots.txt.

AI visibility vs agentic commerce: recommending vs buying
These two terms get mixed up. They describe different steps:
| Agentic commerce | AI visibility | |
|---|---|---|
| What the AI does | Buys, books or pays on a person’s behalf | Recommends or cites a business in an answer |
| Who acts | The AI agent, with the person’s approval | The person, after reading the answer |
| Example (real, 2025–2026) | ChatGPT Instant Checkout; Meta Muse buying with Link by Stripe | Copilot citing a lender review as a source |
| What a business needs | A checkout an agent can use (e.g. ACP, UCP) | To be the page or name the AI picks |
| How you measure it | Orders placed by agents | How often you are named or cited |
AI visibility is the step to work on now. Agentic commerce builds on it. Read what agentic commerce means for small businesses.
