TL;DR — Key Facts

  • →Assistants with web search build lender shortlists from the pages they retrieve for your question: reviews, comparisons, lender sites and directories.
  • →The shortlist reflects which sources were found and trusted. It is not a survey of rates or approval odds.
  • →In Bing data through July 19, 2026, Loans & Mortgages was the largest topic of AI answers citing FundBizPro: 1,727 of 2,991 citations across 128 tracked queries.
  • →Answers change between runs. Ask the same question several times before trusting any "top 3."
  • →Use an AI shortlist to decide who to call, then check real rates and terms. SBA Lender Match is free and connects you with SBA-approved lenders.

What happens when you ask an AI for a lender

Ask Copilot, ChatGPT with search, Gemini or Perplexity "who is the best equipment lender for a small business?" and the assistant runs one or more web searches behind the scenes (Bing calls these grounding queries), reads the pages that come back, and writes an answer from them, often with source links.

So the lenders you see are the ones that appear, and are described clearly, in the pages the assistant retrieved for that exact wording. Change "equipment lender" to "equipment financing for a restaurant" and the retrieved pages, and the shortlist, can change too.

The assistant recommends and you still apply. No AI agent applies for loans on your behalf yet (see will AI agents shop for loans?).

What our citation data shows about lender questions

Bing reports which of its AI answers cite a site. For FundBizPro, lender questions dominated. In about 85 days to July 19, 2026, Loans & Mortgages accounted for 1,727 of 2,991 citations across 128 tracked grounding queries, far ahead of Franchising at 591.

The top lender-related questions were:

Grounding queryCitationsOur share
Fora Financial equipment financing review16127.7%
chase small business loan15229.6%
Fora Financial alternative vs traditional business lending evaluation10729.7%
Bank of America small business installment loans review8425.2%
Chase business services SBA loans evaluation7728.4%
wells fargo small business loans7239.1%

Most of these name a specific lender and ask for a review or comparison, rather than a generic "best lender" list. No single source dominated either. Our share of any one query was well under half. Full data: AI citations case study.

Why an AI shortlist is not a lender comparison

  • It doesn’t know your file. Rates and approval depend on your credit, time in business, revenue and collateral. The assistant doesn’t have that unless you tell it, and even then it can’t price a loan.
  • It can be out of date. Rates, minimum requirements and products change. An assistant may summarize a review written months ago.
  • It favors well-documented lenders. A lender with clear public pages and many third-party reviews is easier to cite than a local bank or credit union with little online detail, even if the local option would suit you better.
  • It varies. The same question can produce a different shortlist on the next run.

AI is still useful here. It explains loan types well and can draft the questions to ask each lender. It just can’t tell you what you’ll be offered.

How to use an AI lender shortlist safely

  1. Ask the same question 3 times in a fresh chat, and note which lenders appear consistently.
  2. Read the sources it links. If a claim has no source, verify it on the lender’s own site.
  3. Check your readiness first. Our lending readiness calculator shows which loan types fit your profile before you contact anyone.
  4. Add SBA lenders. For SBA loans, the SBA’s free Lender Match tool connects you with participating SBA-approved lenders. It is not an application and doesn’t guarantee a match.
  5. Compare real offers. Compare APR, total repayment, fees and prepayment terms side by side, not the AI’s description of them.

Our lender reviews, such as Fora Financial and OnDeck, list products and requirements in one place for that step.

If you are a lender: what affects whether you are named

No assistant publishes its formula, and Google says its AI features need no special markup. But the retrieval step suggests what helps:

  • Public, specific product pages: loan types, amounts, terms, minimum requirements and typical timelines in plain text.
  • Presence in the pages that get cited: independent reviews and comparisons of your products.
  • Consistency: the same facts about you across your site, directories and review pages.

An AI shortlist tells you who to look at, not what you’ll be offered. Check which loan types fit your profile before you call anyone.
